NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwire) — 09/27/12 — Con Edison will host NYC Solar Connection, an event to educate solar installers about large projects and match installers with the representatives of large commercial, industrial and multi-family residential buildings.
The event will be held at 8:45 a.m. October 1 at Con Edison headquarters, 4 Irving Place, Manhattan. Con Edison, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the City University of New York (CUNY) are organizing the event to encourage solar generation in New York City and Westchester County.
The event is in conjunction with NYSERDA–s plan to offer incentives of up to $3 million to building owners who install photovoltaic (PV) systems of at least 50 kilowatts on commercial, industrial and multi-family residential buildings as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo–s NY Sun Initiative.
Twenty-four installers and the representatives of more than 300 buildings that could accommodate PV systems of at least 50 kilowatts have registered to attend.
The morning session is for installers only. It will educate installers about the requirements of large PV interconnections. Installers will hear presentations by CUNY, NYSERDA, Con Edison, the New York City Department of Buildings and the Fire Department of New York.
The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m. and give building owners the opportunity to visit booths set up by installers.
Con Edison supports policies that encourage the development of solar power without increasing costs to ratepayers. A website, , explains the economic and environmental benefits of solar, the installation process and net metering.
Net metering allows customers to reduce their bills and even sell excess power they generate from alternative sources to the company through a rolling credit on their bills. Residential customers are reimbursed for excess solar generation at the end of the year.
Con Edison provided technical assistance to help build the New York City Solar Map (), which provides information on the solar potential of buildings. The map was built by CUNY, with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, NYSERDA and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg–s office.
The company also shortened the approval process for customers who want to install residential systems (those under 25 kilowatts).
Customers in New York City and Westchester County have completed about 900 solar projects producing approximately 16 megawatts of electricity.
