How to Switch Energy Provider Easily

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 11/06/12 — Switching energy providers could save you hundreds of pounds a year. Asda Money explains how you could switch energy services and save money today.

The cost of energy is soaring as the UK–s –big six– energy suppliers push up prices. Figures show that a staggering 82% of Asda customers believe that bills need to fall by an average of GBP 39 a month to make them affordable(i).

Yet as suppliers fail to reduce bills, the only choice for many is finding a better tariff.

Shop around

One of the easiest ways to switch providers is to compare deals online. Going online and using a comparison table is a fast and easy way to see which provider offers the best deal on a tariff; one which is right for your circumstances. It is a much faster and effective way of finding a better policy than going directly to the energy provider and finding out what tariffs are available individually from them.

Know your tariff

There are so many different types of energy tariff available and it could be overwhelming to start searching for a new one without any idea of what you need. Most –cheaper– tariffs are those that are managed with bills online or pay by monthly direct debit compared to those that are paid on a quarterly basis or by cash or cheque.

Time your switch

The leading six energy providers are fiercely competitive and may try to attract each other–s customers. This means that if one of the large providers is going to reduce the cost of its gas or electricity the others are likely to follow suit in a bid to attract more customers.

If they raise prices the same could also happen, which is why consumers should choose the right time when switching energy suppliers. For example, SSE has recently announced a price hike of 9% across their gas and electivity tariffs.(i) Now their customers might be keen to look into cheaper deals, however, if they swap to a provider who will later increase their prices, customers might have switch again or might not be able to.
