The GLAD Products Company Helps Minneapolis With Waste Reduction Efforts

OAKLAND, CA — (Marketwire) — 11/15/12 — The GLAD Products Company is stepping up with support for Minneapolis area event organizers to help reduce waste. With this effort, Glad® hopes to help increase diversion numbers at local events over the next year by 70 to 90 percent, with the ultimate goal of these events diverting all but one bag of waste from landfill, with the rest going to recycling or composting.

Through a joint effort with ClearStream Recycling, Inc., The GLAD Products Company will assist organizations and communities in Minneapolis by providing resources and educational materials — including ClearStream waste, recycling and compost station donations and appropriate signage — which community members now have complimentary access to for their event needs. The effort includes collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Linden Hills Power & Light, a non-profit that leads local waste reduction efforts.

“When the City of Minneapolis and a strong neighborhood organization such as Linden Hills Power & Light take a stance to reduce waste, Glad® is honored to join them and provide event planners — and ultimately consumers — responsible waste management solutions,” said Molly Steinkrauss, for The GLAD Products Company. “We know that waste reduction isn–t a problem that can be solved overnight, which is why we developed our One Bag platform. We–re committed to supporting waste diversion efforts and educating everyone from event organizers to consumers on small steps they can take to reduce waste that make a lasting impact.”

Glad–s One Bag campaign launched in 2011 to help reduce waste at events, large and small, with the ultimate goal of only one bag of waste going to landfill with the rest diverted to recycling and composting. Results released in a 2006 California study(1) of 25 different large public venues and events indicated that on average 2.44 pounds of waste are generated per visitor, per day. As an education and action platform, Glad® is extending One Bag partnerships to municipalities, cities and local governments, beginning with Minneapolis, to help communities drive education, participation and impact in waste diversion programs.

Glad® has been working with the City of Minneapolis to identify events for waste diversion pilots, including the Team Ortho Foundation–s Monster Dash 5k and the City of Lakes Loppet, while Linden Hills Power & Light is acting as an event resource for implementation along with providing volunteer assistance.

“We are thrilled to have a partner like Glad® to help further educate residents about the simple, small steps that can be taken to reduce waste at events,” said Felicity Britton, executive director of Linden Hills Power & Light. “Our neighborhood organization–s goal is to shrink our local carbon footprint through education, community engagement and action; which matches up nicely with the work Glad® is doing through its One Bag platform.”

According to Phil Schliesman, the City of Minneapolis License Inspector, who coordinates permitting and waste management plans with event organizers, “With the City Council of Minneapolis recently passing a new recycling ordinance that requires large events to have a waste management plan, the education and resources Glad® is providing will go a long way in helping event organizers reduce waste at their events.”
