The simple act of turning down your heat can help reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, new data from WWF-Canada shows.
With WWF–s National Sweater Day, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, coming up on February 7, Canadians are preparing to put on a sweater and turn down their thermostats to reduce their carbon footprint and show their support for energy conservation. If all Canadians lowered their thermostats by just 2 degrees Celsius this winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 4 megatons – equivalent to a shutting down a 600 megawatt coal-fired power station.
To help demonstrate the impact of even one house turning down the heat, WWF has calculated the greenhouse gas emission savings for sample households across Canada.
Quotes
“Energy conservation is critical to fighting climate change, along with a switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. According to WWF–s Energy Report, global energy demand in 2050 must be – and can be – 15 per cent lower than in 2005 for the world to be powered by 100 per cent renewable, sustainable energy, and avoid the worst effects of climate change. National Sweater Day is an important reminder of how simple it can be to reduce energy use, and that we all have a role to play in shrinking our carbon footprint.”
“Loblaw is proud to partner with WWF in presenting National Sweater Day, made possible through partial proceeds from the sale of plastic shopping bags in our stores. More than 650 banner stores across Canada including Loblaws, Zehrs, Provigo, Real Canadian Superstores, Atlantic Superstores and nofrills will be lowering the temperature a few degrees in support of this initiative. We believe championing National Sweater Day is one more way we demonstrate our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.”
