LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwired) — 04/03/13 — In an effort to protect Majorca–s breath-taking beauty and its unspoilt landscape from the construction of various projects, Grup Balear d–Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa – Balearic Group for Ornithology and Natural Protection (GOB) has launched “”. The campaign raises awareness around the proposed construction of a shopping complex in Ses Fontanelles near Palma on Mallorca–s last remaining wetlands, and the urbanization of the Serra Tramuntana-two projects that were recently announced by the Partido Popular Government in hopes of stimulating the economy and creating jobs for the local communities.
The GOB wants to protect the island–s natural splendor and is worried that in addition to the proposed construction, the import and incineration of waste from the mainland and lenient protection of S–Albufera will likely cause irreversible damage to the area. Majorcan artist Miquel Barcelo has even created a video in support of the campaign showing the island covered in drops of black paint that is meant to represent the destruction that, according to the GOB, may occur as a result of the proposed projects.
The island is renowned for its beauty and unspoilt landscape and thousands of tourists flock to the area to indulge in Majorca holidays each year.
