SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN — (Marketwired) — 05/06/13 — Local student wins cash by proposing to help the community develop sustainable transportation.
Alana Krug-MacLeod is the proud winner of the 2013 Caring for our Watersheds (CFW) contest, brought to Saskatoon by Agrium Inc. and the Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin.
Announced on April 27, Alana came up with a creative answer to a very simple but profound question: –What can you do to improve your watershed?–
How does Alana–s idea to encourage the use of kicksleds help the community? Sustainable transportation is a key part of limiting global climate change and maintaining a healthy environment. Kicksleds can be used as wheelbarrows, grocery carts, baby strollers or passenger carriers. The project aims to popularize kicksledding so that it can be added to the range of healthy, non-polluting forms of transportation available to the residents of Saskatoon, while promoting winter activities and building useful skills among youth.
As a result of her efforts, Alana won $1,000 for herself and $1,000 for her school, Aden Bowman Collegiate, for first place in the contest. To win, Alana researched her local watershed, identified an environmental concern, came up with a realistic solution and presented her idea to panel of community judges.
Over $12,000 was awarded in prizes to ten finalists and their schools plus $10,000 is available to help implement the participant–s ideas.
“The purpose of the contest is simple,” says Agrium Inc. program advisor Lindsey Metheral. “Our goal is to encourage students to learn about their local watershed and be inspired to make improvements to the land, air and water. With community and school support, we have seen the creativity and determination students have for protecting and preserving the environment. It–s inspiring when they turn their ideas into reality.”
“The third year of this program in Saskatchewan has been a great success,” said Lis Mack, Manager for the Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin. “It was wonderful to see all of the great ideas and plans that our future leaders have to improve the South Saskatchewan River Watershed.”
