St. Lawrence County Completes Rapid Bridge Rehabilitation Using AXION–s 100% Recycled STRUXURE Boards

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — (Marketwired) — 07/09/13 — . (OTCQB: AXIH), a leader in recycled plastic and plastic composite technologies used to produce ECOTRAX® railties and STRUXURE® building products, announced today that the of New York state has completed the repair and restoration of the Dean Road Bridge in Clare, New York using AXION–s STRUXURE® 6″x24″ tongue & groove boards. The purchase order for this shipment of 100% recycled plastic boards was on March 19th.

St. Lawrence County engineers, in conjunction with AXION–s support, completed the bridge re-deck in just nine working days. “This was a rapid rehabilitation project in which AXION–s boards offered the best of both worlds. STRUXURE® materials are as easy to work with as wood but offers the longevity of concrete and steel. Had we used concrete to re-deck the bridge instead of STRUXURE® boards, the deck cure time alone would have lasted four weeks. Using recycled materials on this scenic bridge is very much in keeping with our financial and ecological goals. We fully intend to use more of AXION–s products for future infrastructure projects in St. Lawrence County,” stated Andrew Willard, Senior Civil Engineer for the St. Lawrence County–s Department of Highways.

STRUXURE® tongue & groove boards were installed using hand labor and an excavator. “This eliminated the need for a crane on site, which reduced our costs and avoided the need to move utility lines,” added Willard.

This marks the county–s second infrastructure building project using STRUXURE®. Plastics, including recycled composite materials, are increasingly being recognized as a favorable alternative to traditional building materials, with benefits including prefabrication and speed of installation. A recent article in Plastics Engineering magazine titled, “,” highlighted the benefits of using plastics for infrastructure building of the future.

“AXION is part of a broader trend in infrastructure renewal in the U.S. As the country–s aging infrastructure is upgraded and replaced, engineers are looking at new solutions and materials that were not available in decades past. An increasing number of municipal engineers are opting to take advantage of the favorable structural properties, long term economic advantages, and environmental benefits of our STRUXURE® 100% recycled building materials,” stated AXION President and CEO Steve Silverman.

The states that while $10.5 billion is spent annually on the construction and maintenance of bridges, a $17 billion annual investment is needed to substantially improve current bridge conditions. According to the Federal Highway Administration, in 2011 bridges were either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, with a surface area exceeding 89 million square meters.

“Bridge re-decking is a key target market for our STRUXURE® products. We offer flexibility of design, prompt shipment, easy installation, and products that require no maintenance. This is a turn-key solution for infrastructure maintenance and building,” added AXION–s Executive Vice President Building Materials, Dave Crane.

The Dean Road Bridge is a low volume, heavy load-bearing bridge which supports 60 ton logging trucks. In scenic up-state New York, the bridge is located over a designated “wild and scenic waterway” regulated by the Adirondack Park Agency. Re-decking the bridge using AXION–s STRUXURE® boards was very well received and approved by the park agency because the tongue & groove decking boards have fully covered what used to be an open steel grate deck. Solid decking reduces the quantity of gravel and other debris from falling into the environmentally protected stream under the bridge.

STRUXURE® Bridges are engineered from AXION–s patented, 100%-recycled plastic formulation. Because the recycled structural composite material is inert, STRUXURE® Bridges will not rot or absorb moisture, and they are impervious to insect infestation, making them ideal in harsh environments. Because of their durability and low maintenance, they are an excellent cost-effective, long-term solution in bridge applications. In boardwalks, short-span vehicular bridges, and multi-span superstructures, STRUXURE® is specified for its performance, longevity, and sustainable design. From Scotland to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, STRUXURE® Bridges are providing long-term, sustainable solutions around the world. For more information about STRUXURE® Bridges, visit .
