BROOKLYN, NY — (Marketwire) — 08/09/11 — Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the staff of Mrs. Maxwell–s bakery today as he presented the small business with a proclamation declaring Tuesday, August 9th, 2011, “Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery –Go Green– Celebration Day.” The bakery was commended for its unwavering years of commitment to Brooklyn residents and for taking its long-standing business to the next level by –going green– through
“Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery has satisfied the sweet tooth of Brooklynites since 1928 in the very same location on Atlantic Avenue and I commend them for taking their long-standing business to the next level by –going green– through Con Edison–s Small Business Direct Install Program,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “Con Edison–s program is a win-win and I hope that Mrs. Maxwell–s successful example will encourage many other small businesses to do the same.”
Sam Naraiswar, Vice President and General Manager of Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery, received the proclamation during an on-site ceremony at the East New York bakery alongside Con Edison representatives. Borough President Markowitz commended the bakery for helping to make the great borough of Brooklyn a “greener” place to live, work and raise a family.
“We–re thrilled with the results of the program and are honored to receive this proclamation from Borough President Markowitz,” said Sam Naraiswar, Vice President and General Manager of Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery. “Not only do we now have better lighting in key areas of the bakery, but we–re also saving over $7,000 on our energy costs annually. These are significant savings for our business, particularly during these challenging financial times.”
Con Edison–s Small Business Direct Install Program provided a free energy survey for Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery, which revealed a number of lighting upgrades that would help the business save money and energy. Con Edison provided 71 free CFL lamps, replaced 86 additional fluorescent fixtures and lamps and installed 14 LED lamps. Since Con Edison paid 70 percent of the cost of recommended improvements, Mrs. Maxwell–s paid only 30 percent out-of-pocket. Because Mrs. Maxwell–s is now saving over $7,075 on energy costs annually, the investment paid for itself in less than five months.
“Con Edison is proud to provide businesses with the tools needed to –go green– and we–re very excited to be present today as Mrs. Maxwell–s Bakery is recognized for these efforts,” said Rebecca Craft, Director, Energy Efficiency and Demand Management, Con Edison. “The Small Business Direct Install Program is just one of the many energy saving programs that the Con Edison Green Team has to offer. We–ve already helped thousands of Brooklyn residents and business owners reap significant savings and we look forward to continuing these programs, which help our city to become a cleaner, and greener, place to work and live.”
