AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwire) — 02/01/12 — Building Turbines, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: BLDW), a designer and manufacturer of commercial rooftop wind turbine systems and other renewable energy technologies, reported today it is working with officials at 21 Rio Apartments on a plan for potentially installing a wind turbine system on the roof of the 21-story luxury apartment building located near downtown Austin.
The 21 Rio project would mark Building Turbines– first installation at this elevation, some feet from the streets below. The residential tower is in the West Campus area of the University of Texas at Austin.
“21 Rio is currently the only Green Certified residential building in West Campus and already has extensive green features,” said Eddie Moreno of 21 Rio. “We continue, however, to seek ways to produce additional value and improve operating efficiencies for the building–s owner, Connaught Real Estate Finance, LLC. One way to accomplish that goal is by adding other alternative/renewable energy sources to further our green initiatives and reduce our overall utility expense and carbon footprint. Building Turbine–s innovative HAWT (horizontal axis wind turbine) system could prove to be an ideal solution for 21 Rio to remain one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in our market,” said Moreno.
As part of its feasibility assessment, Building Turbines in December installed monitoring equipment on 21 Rio–s rooftop and has been collecting wind speed and other critical data for several weeks. “We believe 21 Rio is an excellent example of a commercial building that could greatly benefit from our rooftop mounted wind turbine system” noted Greg Miller, chief business development officer for Building Turbines, Inc. “21 Rio appears to be ideally suited for producing rooftop wind power due to the building–s location and elevation. If our initial assessments are confirmed, our wind turbine would provide the residential community living there with clean, quiet, low-cost, on-premise power generation.”
“We are excited to be working on this project with the professionals at 21 Rio and look forward to providing them with a renewable energy source solution for their leading-edge, environmentally friendly apartment building,” said John Graham, Sr., CEO and founder of Building Turbines, Inc.
