DENVER, CO — (Marketwire) — 09/25/12 — CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, has received confirmation that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced today that the CH2M-WG Idaho, LLC (CWI) contract for operations management and decommissioning at the US DOE–s Idaho National Laboratory in eastern Idaho has been extended for three years. CWI–s period of performance on the current Idaho Cleanup Project contract ends September 30, 2012. DOE extended that contract for three years through September 30, 2015, and the anticipated dollar value of this extension is $730 million.
This extension will help ensure that the government receives the highest return on investment for its environmental restoration work. Since 2005, CWI has been able to operate the highly successful cleanup program in Idaho, completing nearly every project ahead of schedule and under budget, saving the tax payer millions of dollars, and accelerating work in the current contract.
“Not only has CWI safely reduced the environmental footprint by millions of square feet, shipped thousands of cubic meters of transuranic waste out of Idaho, and exceeded waste exhumation targets, including completion of the infamous Pit 9, but CWI exercised ingenuity and efficiencies that delivered its current project $520 million less than planned,” commented Mike McKelvy, CH2M HILL Division President and CWI Board of Managers Chairman. “The Idaho Cleanup Project has delivered more cost savings to U.S. tax payers than the balance of the DOE Environmental Management complex combined, demonstrating proven results and solid return on investment.
Under the contract extension CWI will be responsible for treatment and disposal of radioactive waste; retrieval, disposal and other remediation related to buried waste; safe management of spent nuclear fuel; disposition of nuclear materials; disposition of reactor and non-reactor nuclear facilities; environmental remediation activities; and completion of the sodium bearing waste processing.
The Idaho Cleanup Project contract was awarded to CWI in March, 2005.
