On October 1, 2013, which is also the start of the 2014 fiscal year, the U.S. federal government shut down due to lack of appropriate funds, forcing furloughs of 800,000 workers and suspension of services not exempted by the Antideficiency Act, while another 1.3 million workers were required to report to work without compensation until an appropriations bill is passed on Capitol Hill. This will be the first U.S. federal government shutdown since 1995-96, which lasted a total of 21 days.
