STRATFORD, CT and WESTPORT, CT — (Marketwire) — 10/25/12 — The Town of Westport is fast becoming a Fairfield County leader in the adoption of solar technology, capitalizing on partnerships with and to help homeowners and businesses reap the cost and environmental benefits of solar power. Encon Solar is pleased to announce that the town–s latest installation will transform the Saugatuck Railroad Station into the first solar transportation hub along the Metro-North Rail Line with the addition of four solar-powered charging stations for electric vehicles.
Encon Solar, a division of Encon, will install a 27-kilowatt solar-panel array on the roof of the depot–s eastbound terminal. The solar array will feed power to the charging stations and lights on the platform and provide electricity to businesses in the eastbound terminal. ECI Energy will manage the solar-panel installation and bill the town for energy usage — at a cost expected to be 30 percent less than what it would otherwise pay a traditional utility company. Installation will begin second week of November, and a ribbon cutting is scheduled for Dec. 19.
This exciting project reflects Westport–s ongoing commitment to renewable energy and the environment. The town is one of four in Connecticut selected to participate in Solarize Connecticut, an innovative pilot project sponsored by the Connecticut Clean Energy Finance & Investment Authority (CEFIA), the John Merck Fund and Smart Power to encourage residential installations of solar photovoltaic (electric) and hot water systems.
Solarize CT Westport has chosen Encon Solar as the sole source installer for the pilot project. The program–s group purchasing power makes installation more affordable for all participants and gives them a unique opportunity to save money on their monthly utility bills. Residents have until Dec. 14 to enroll.
“Encon is extremely proud to partner with Westport on these two major solar projects. The town–s efforts to promote and develop solar technology make it a pioneer in our area and serve as a model for other communities,” said Glenn Cucinell, Solar Division Manager, Encon.
