OAK HAMMOCK MARSH, MANITOBA — (Marketwired) — 08/30/13 — While temperatures across much of the country still feel like summer this week, fall is definitely coming, and one of the surest indications for hunters is the opening of the waterfowl hunting season. Across most provinces in Canada, hunting for waterfowl begins in September (check your province–s rules for exact dates and regulations) and provides opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and experience first-hand the natural areas that are critical for everyone.
“The opening weekend of duck and goose hunting is greatly anticipated by those with a passion for waterfowling,” says Greg Siekaniec, Chief Executive Officer for Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). “It–s also the perfect opportunity to celebrate our hunting heritage and share time afield with family and friends while reconnecting with the land.”
DUC–s roots of support comes from a rich heritage of waterfowl hunters who were determined to invest in habitat conservation when waterfowl populations declined in the 1930s. Though the many benefits of wetland conservation have attracted a diversity of support for our work today, waterfowl hunters remain among our most passionate and dedicated supporters.
Waterfowlers headed out this weekend should find healthy populations of most species of ducks and geese and good wetland conditions awaiting them as they begin another season in the field. Many of DUC–s 9,300 projects across the country provide public access for hunting and quality habitat to attract waterfowl. Information on DUC areas open to hunting can be found at .
Learning to hunt can be an intimidating undertaking. Regulations, licensing, equipment, locations, and how-to can all add up to a sense of frustration and confusion. At DUC, we alleviate the sense of uncertainty with our mentored hunt program. Through this program, youth and new adult hunters are educated about hunting and then mentored on actual duck and goose hunts with experienced hunters. Hunts are taking place throughout the country, from B.C. to the Maritimes, giving new hunters the chance to experience the thrill of whistling wings overhead.
“The mentored hunt program is a fantastic way to introduce someone new to hunting; these hunters are our future conservationists and engaging them in the outdoors is important to ensure a bright future for wetland conservation,” says Chris Benson, national waterfowling heritage coordinator for DUC. More information on mentored hunt opportunities can be obtained from Benson at or (204)-467-3209.
DUC is also pleased to announce the continuation of our partnership with The Canadian Tradition show on the Outdoor Life Network and Wild TV. The new season will air in January, so join host Taylor Wright for some great waterfowl hunts in locations across Canada, some hunting tips, and to learn more about the critical role DUC–s conservation programs play in providing healthy populations of waterfowl across the continent and the benefits that wetlands provide society. Last season is currently running. Check your local listings for show times.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. Learn more at ducks.ca.
