The Home Builders Association of Lexington (HBAL) became the first home builders association in the United States to formally enter into an agreement with the Residential Services Energy Network (RESNET) to have their members– homes energy rated on the HERS Index, and to use as an incentive for homebuyers to purchase energy efficient homes.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two parties, requires all builder members belonging to the Kentucky home builder association to have every new home they construct individually inspected and tested for energy efficiency, using the HERS Index rating system. The resulting HERS Index scores will be used to market the homes to consumers, similar to the miles-per-gallon concept employed by the auto industry.
Seen as a breakthrough development for both the ratings industry and RESNET, the agreement between the HBAL and RESNET will serve as a model for future agreements with other home builder associations, which are interested in helping consumers differentiate from existing ones. In addition, RESNET will be co-hosting the 2013 Midwest Residential Energy Conference alongside the HBAL on March 12-13 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Among the points covered in the MOU are:
– RESNET will have the support of the HBAL and its conference supporting allies in endorsing the HERS Index rating system.
– RESNET will gain a regional venue to service builders, raters and other industry professionals in the Midwest who are unable to travel to the national RESNET Conference locations.
– HBAL and the Midwest Residential Energy Conference will have the full endorsement and promotional support of RESNET.
– HBAL (and subsequently the Midwest Residential Energy Conference) will gain a national presence on RESNET–s website, with a link to the and HBAL–s websites.
The MOU further calls for RESNET and the HBAL to work together in an educational partnership to promote and assist accessibility to relevant continuing education as required by residential industry building professionals.
