SEABROOK, NH — (Marketwire) — 09/05/12 — SustainX, Inc., developer of an industry-leading, transformative technology for utility-scale bulk energy storage using compressed air, today announced that it has been issued 11 additional U.S. patents that provide core protection in key areas related to its isothermal compressed air energy storage (ICAES) technology. The new patents bring SustainX–s overall ICAES-related patent count to 23, all of which have been issued within the last two years.
“We–re focused on bringing our grid-scale energy storage technology to market and a broad intellectual property portfolio is a key part of our strategy,” said Tom Zarrella, SustainX President and CEO. “SustainX now holds more than 450 patent claims broadly applicable across our technology space, which we believe will make it quite difficult for competitors to challenge us.”
SustainX–s isothermal (constant-temperature) energy storage system removes heat from air being compressed for storage and returns heat when that air is expanded to generate electricity. This heat transfer greatly reduces the energy efficiency losses of conventional high-pressure air compression and eliminates the need to burn fossil fuel as part of the expansion process. In addition, the SustainX system uses pipe-type storage, which can be located almost anywhere.
SustainX is now building its first megawatt-scale system, which will be operational in the first half of 2013. The company–s fuel-free, site-anywhere solutions address the emerging markets for grid-scale energy storage — which are being driven by the rapid growth in renewable power generation, the savings in avoiding transmission and distribution (T&D) build-outs, and the need to make conventional power plants as efficient as possible.

SustainX–s isothermal compressed air energy storage (ICAES) technology is a site-anywhere, zero-emissions solution that enables power- and energy-scalable compressed air storage, without the need for caverns or natural gas combustion. SustainX achieves isothermal cycling by combining patented innovations with a design centered on proven industrial principles and mature core components; i.e., a mechanical drive train based on an electric machine and crankshaft. The result is long operating life and a disruptively low levelized cost of energy (LCOE) as compared to competing storage technologies. For more information visit .
