CALGARY, ALBERTA — (Marketwire) — 08/05/11 — Today, the Canadian chapter of the World Alliance for Decentralized Energy (WADE Canada) is pleased to announce that the Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development (CONRAD) has become an Affiliate Member.
A memorandum of understanding was signed in June, to encourage cooperative programs in the field of cleaner hydrocarbon technology.
“A shared vision is key to Canada–s long-term future as an energy powerhouse,” says Jan Buijk, Chair of WADE Canada. “Increased efficiency of our national energy production and consumption activities is paramount. WADE Canada will work with CONRAD in pursuing its mandate to further oil sands R&D to ensure an economically and environmentally sustainable future for the industry.”
Decentralized energy (DE) is defined as heating, cooling and electrical power that is produced, managed and stored where it is consumed. It has many advantages over the standard centralized model we have become accustomed to in North America. The most attractive industrial DE technologies include combined heat and power, cogeneration and waste heat recovery.
Benefits of DE in the oil sands include improved efficiency, reliability, energy security and reduced environmental impacts.
“WADE Canada and CONRAD will exchange information related to cleaner hydrocarbons and DE technology to optimize net energy output from our resources, lengthen resource supplies, and reduce emissions,” says Joy Romero, Board Chair of CONRAD. “Improvement of technology methods and practices that result in cleaner hydrocarbons is beneficial for business, the community, and Canada–s national energy strategy.”
The agreement between WADE Canada and CONRAD outlines four main areas of mutual interest and potential future cooperation: sharing the latest research and results for DE applications in the oil sands, increasing DE capacity in oil sands operations, developing DE training in the oil sands industry, and strengthening practical and academic programs offered at colleges and universities.
ABOUT CONRAD
CONRAD is a network of oil sands operating companies, service, supply and technology companies, universities, and government agencies organized to foster and facilitate collaborative research, development, and demonstration of new and improved environmental and economic technologies for Alberta–s oil sands.
